Metal grinding is a process used to smooth and finish off metal parts. It’s most often used for finishing edges, deburring, smoothening welding joints, creating a sharp edge and for a range of custom edge finishes.
Metal grinding is used extensively in metal fabrication, and at its most simple is a manual operation in job shops. Large custom parts fabricators will typically automate the process through the use of finishing machines. Metal grinding is used to produce a variety of finishes and is an essential part of many manufacturing processes.
Manual metal grinding can be performed simply by using a file, but in most metal fabrications, this will be performed with a grinding machine. Metal grinding can be carried out with a mechanical handheld grinder, or with a stationary grinding machine.
A portable handheld grinding machine may be used in hard-to-reach areas when grinding larger metal parts that will not fit on a machine grinder.
There is a range of different types of machines used for metal grinding each of which is best suited for different jobs. These include:
Whichever method of metal grinding is being used, close attention needs to be paid to the appropriate safety protocols. Protective equipment needs to be worn. This will usually include safety glasses or goggles and a face shield to protect against flying particles. Gloves, aprons, metatarsal safety boots, hearing protection and respiratory protection should also be used.
If you have a small single metal object that you would like to make small adjustments to, then the simplest way to complete this is by using a metal file. For larger and more complex pieces, you may well require some form of grinder.
To grind metal quickly and accurately you need to select the right tool for the job. By looking at the capabilities, advantages and disadvantages of different tools you should be able to ascertain which is the most suitable for the job you have in mind.
